Background
Over multiple years, I (Dr. Stephanie Wilson) have worked in a sustained applied sociological role with Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society. This work has centered on strengthening student member engagement, supporting undergraduate research and writing, and enhancing the visibility and accessibility of sociological scholarship.
My involvement with AKD emerged from my professional background in sociology, academic publishing, and applied research. In collaboration with AKD leadership, my role evolved to include responsibilities across digital media strategy, student-facing programming, scholarly communication, and organizational support, including supporting their flagship peer-reviewed journal, Sociological Inquiry, as their Media Editor. The work spans both strategic planning and hands-on execution, bridging academic sociology with practical organizational needs.
AKD’s mission—to promote scholarship, leadership, and service among sociology students—provided an ideal context for applied sociological work focused on equity, access, and professional development within higher education.
Project Goals
While specific initiatives varied over time, the overarching goals of my work with AKD include:
- Strengthening communication between AKD, its members, and the broader sociology community
- Translating sociological scholarship into accessible, student-centered formats
- Enhancing the digital presence of both AKD and Sociological Inquiry
As with all applied sociology projects, a core goal was to ensure that sociological knowledge served practical ends—supporting students, faculty, and the organization itself in meaningful, measurable ways.
Length of Project
My work with AKD has been ongoing and multi-year, reflecting the nature of applied sociological partnerships that extend beyond single deliverables. While individual initiatives (such as funding cycles, essay competitions, or editorial projects) followed defined timelines, the broader collaboration has unfolded across semesters and academic years.
This sustained engagement allowed for continuity, institutionalizing organizational operations, and iterative improvement—key elements in organizational consulting and applied work.
Associated Tasks
To meet the goals of this collaboration, I contribute to a wide range of interconnected tasks, including:
- Developing and promoting undergraduate research and writing opportunities
- Supporting grant and funding programs for students and chapters
- Writing and editing student- and faculty-facing communications, including a quarterly member newsletter
- Translating academic content into accessible summaries for broader audiences
- Coordinating digital media strategy across social media platforms and the organization’s website
- Assisting with editorial and publication-related workflows
- Collaborating with AKD leadership on organizational planning, promotion and outreach
Many of these tasks required balancing sociological rigor with audience awareness—particularly when communicating with undergraduate students at different stages of their academic journeys.
Project Deliverables
Rather than a single final product, my work with AKD has produced a portfolio of applied deliverables, including:
- Student-facing calls for applications and funding opportunities
- Educational campaigns to increase member recruitment and hone AKD’s brand
- A newly introduced member newsletter, curated to build community across membership
- Outreach materials supporting undergraduate research and professional development
- Digital media content that elevates sociological scholarship and AKD initiatives
Collectively, these deliverables have contributed to AKD’s visibility, accessibility, and impact within the professional sociology community.
Inside the Sociology
Sociology was central to every aspect of this work. At the most visible level, I applied sociological skills in writing, editing, and translating research for diverse audiences. Equally important, however, was the application of sociological insight into organizational communication and digital media strategies. The communication and digital media work relies on a strong sociological imagination that takes the historical context of both the organization and its setting into account, while also understanding the current landscape of higher education—especially in the United States where most chapters reside. T
he work also drew on sociological sensibilities around inclusion, professional socialization, and the role of scholarly communities in shaping academic and career trajectories. While AKD is an honor society and was founded at an elite institution, the organization itself strives to be one of inclusion—rather than exclusion—and the content I produce reflects that goal.
This collaboration highlights how applied sociology can operate beyond traditional research projects—supporting organizations, empowering students, and strengthening the infrastructure that sustains the discipline itself.
